Weifang Far Eastern, China – In offshore geotechnical drilling projects, selecting the right drilling tool is critical to achieving higher penetration rates and reducing operational costs. Recently, an offshore geotechnical drilling contractor working on a Petronas-related project encountered challenging sedimentary formations where some cemented clay layers reached a thickness of up to 10 meters.
During the drilling operation, the contractor found that conventional PDC rock bits were not the most efficient solution for these specific geological conditions. To improve drilling performance in the thick clay and cemented sedimentary layers, the project team decided to replace PDC rock bits with STEP DRAG BITS supplied by FAR EASTERN.
For drilling through soft-to-medium cemented sedimentary formations, the drilling system required significantly larger mud flow passages to ensure effective cutting removal and improved hydraulic performance. FAR EASTERN’s drag rock bits, available with 3 wings and 4 wings designs, provided an ideal solution for these demanding applications.
Field results demonstrated that the STEP DRAG BITS successfully handled dense sedimentary formations, delivering faster penetration through clay layers while maintaining stable drilling performance. The optimized cutting structure and large fluid passages helped improve hole cleaning efficiency and reduced drilling challenges caused by sticky clay formations.
FAR EASTERN continuously develops customized drilling solutions based on different geological conditions. With extensive experience in manufacturing PDC Bits, Tricone Bits, Drag Bits, Hybrid Bits, Diamond Bits, and Hammer Bits, the company provides reliable drilling tools for applications including offshore geotechnical investigation, water well drilling, mining, oil & gas exploration, and HDD projects.
