Advanced Brazing Technology Ensures High Performance and Long Service Life
PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) drill bits are widely used in oil & gas drilling, mining, geological exploration, water well drilling, and other challenging applications due to their excellent cutting efficiency and wear resistance. The PDC cutters are the key components responsible for rock cutting performance. However, the quality of the connection between PDC cutters and the bit body directly affects drilling efficiency, durability, and reliability.
At FAR EASTERN, advanced brazing technology is applied to securely install PDC cutters onto the drill bit body, ensuring strong bonding strength and stable performance under demanding drilling conditions.
1. Precise Cutter Pocket Preparation
Before brazing, each cutter pocket on the PDC bit body is precisely machined according to the designed cutter position, back rake angle, and side rake angle.
The pocket surface must be clean, accurate, and properly prepared to guarantee a uniform brazing gap between the PDC cutter and the bit body. Proper positioning ensures that every cutter works efficiently during drilling operations.
2. Cleaning and Surface Treatment
Before the brazing process, both the PDC cutters and cutter pockets are carefully cleaned to remove oil, dust, oxidation, and impurities.
A clean bonding surface improves the wettability of the brazing alloy and helps achieve a stronger metallurgical connection between the cutter and the bit body.
3. Application of Brazing Alloy
During the brazing process, a high-performance silver-based brazing alloy is placed between the PDC cutter and the bit body.
When heated to the required temperature, the brazing alloy melts and flows into the gap through capillary action, creating a strong bond after cooling. This process securely fixes the PDC cutters while maintaining cutter stability during high-load drilling operations.
4. Controlled Heating and Cooling Process
Temperature control is one of the most important factors in PDC cutter brazing.
Excessive heat may damage the diamond layer of the PDC cutter, while insufficient heat may result in weak bonding. Therefore, professional heating equipment and strict process control are required.
After brazing, controlled cooling is performed to reduce internal stress and prevent cutter damage or brazing failure.
5. Quality Inspection After Brazing
After the brazing process is completed, each PDC bit undergoes strict inspection, including:
Cutter positioning inspection
Brazing joint quality inspection
Cutter angle verification
Surface quality inspection
Final dimensional inspection
These quality control procedures ensure that every PDC drill bit delivered to customers meets reliable performance standards.
